The Endlings – Tales of Extinction

The Endlings are a musical collaborative who joined forces in order to pay tribute to the extinction of all species. Founded in 2019, they are: Berke Can Ozcan, playing objects, drums and gongs; Bilgehan Ozis, on synthesizer and sampler; and Serdar Ateser, doing vocals, guitar and broken bass. Hailing from diverse musical foundations ranging from jazz and electronica to progressive rock, the project produces unique sounds and feelings.

The Endlings examine and celebrate extinction as an intrinsic part of the evolution of all species, creating music for extinct animals and organisms as a positive way to reconnect with the world of nature, free from gloom and anxiety. One typical song reflects on the inner voice and physical experience of a wooly mammoth, evoking its curiosity through a musical soundscape of massive bodies curiously wandering the tundra 4,000 years ago.

In the group’s atmospheric sound, a musical duality emerges where almost musique concrète textures collide with free improvisation. Placing minimal patterns, ostinatos, and pulses into imagined soundscapes, they invent unique timbres. As they alternate between serene soundscapes and a cacophony of Zorn-esque immediacy, or between throbbing sub-bass and dry vocals, the music projects listeners through time. The band also creates a cinematic sensibility by layering recognizable natural sounds in the music, telling stories that are both impressionist and truthful, made of spoken and sung voice craft; which evoke their particular influences, such as Brian Eno and Mark Hollis. As the film composer Ali N. Askin commented, The Endlings “stimulate your inner cinema” (askin.info).
